Ensuring that everyone in our families is safe is of the utmost importance. Think about your father – he takes pride in his collection of guns. Think about your mother – she loves the freedom she feels in her vintage convertible. What steps would you take after the onset of dementia symptoms to ensure safety? Learn from Jennifer Phillips, Senior Research Center Program Manager at the Washington University Knight Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, about considerations regarding persons with dementia and their living environment, driving habits, weapons, medications, falls, and more. In this presentation, Jennifer discusses planning ahead regarding caregiver, legal, and financial support. She also discusses safety strategies for people with dementia in five key areas: driving, medications, home environment, financial safety, and wandering. One key takeaway from this presentation is that there are resources available to help as dementia and Alzheimer’s become apparent or diagnosed, and one must hope for the best AND plan for the worst.
