Regional Ombudsman Coordinator Position Summary

Regional Ombudsman Coordinators (ROCs) promote and protect residents’ rights, dignity, safety, and quality of life in long-term care facilities.

They assist residents to address and resolve issues to their satisfaction and act as a mediator to residents, families, and facility staff to help resolve resident complaints. Regional Ombudsman Coordinators serve as a communication link between residents and staff, becoming a relied-upon source of information and assistance, benefiting everyone involved.  

Most importantly, Regional Ombudsman Coordinators help residents rediscover a sense of self determination, empowering them to exercise their rights.

This person works closely with the current regional Regional Ombudsman Coordinator team and the Program Director. Regional Ombudsman Coordinator report to the Program Director with supervision from the Lead Regional Ombudsman Coordinator.

This position is 20 hours per week and covers portions of St. Louis County and all of St. Charles County.

Duties

  • Identify, investigate, and resolve complaints.
  • Provide services to protect residents and their interests.
  • Provide technical support to resident and family councils.
  • Ensure all long-term care facilities in the ombudsman’s coverage area are visited.
  • Provide information and assistance regarding long-term care issues and the needs and rights of residents.
  • Provide community education programs to inform groups including community members, residents, families, and long-term care staff about the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program and resident rights.
  • Maintain files and reporting to the State Ombudsman.
  • Provide regular consultation to volunteers in region as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Negotiation and problem-resolution skills.
  • Highly organized with the ability to set up and maintain processes and ensure completion of delegated tasks.
  • Provide detailed and accurate reports.
  • Comfort working directly with older adults and people with disabilities with a variety of demographics, identities and viewpoints.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including comfort on the phone and presentation skills.
  • Personal life experience with long-term care or knowledge of the industry landscape.
  • Experience as a volunteer for a nonprofit organization.
  • Understanding of institutional racism’s effect on health outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Social Work, Gerontology, Human Services, Nursing, Psychology, Long-Term Care, Public Administration or Health or a closely related field.
  • Experience in a nonprofit setting is a plus
  • Strong computer skills, proficient in Microsoft Office, Google for Nonprofits, and database software.
  • Reliable transportation throughout assigned region. If operating personal vehicle, must provide current drivers license and proof of auto insurance.
  • Pass a background check, including the Family Care Safety Registry and St. Louis City and County checks.
  • COVID vaccine with CDC-recommended booster is required to be employed by VOYCE.

Compensation and Working Conditions

  • $21-23 per hour, depending on education and experience.
  • Employees accrue up to 15 days per year in PTO in their first year of employment, prorated for part-time employees.
  • Mileage reimbursement is provided at the going federal rate.
  • Employees have access to professional development budgets and an Employee Assistance Program.
  • Hourly, non-exempt position. Hours are typically Monday-Friday, with occasional weekends or evenings required for meetings or events.
  • At least two overnight visits to Jefferson City or other parts of Missouri annually for statewide meetings.
  • ROCs work in the community most days of the week with some office time at home. In-office team meetings are typically on Wednesdays at our office in South St. Louis County.
  • The nature of this work requires Regional Ombudsman Coordinators to work in-person with residents of long-term care communities. Staff members are provided with PPE. 

Please note that to be considered for this position, a candidate must not have any resolved conflicts of interest, including having not worked in long-term care for a period of at least one year.
